With Goalkeeper Summer unavailable, Nevaeh stepped up and donned the gloves. She was brilliant throughout, making saves and launching some immense kicks up field.
Rosie, fresh off her Girl of the Game performance last week, again took up post at right-back and impressed with excellent clearances and forward attacks. Grace, holding firm on the left, skipped round Rotherham's tackles to feed the ball to midfield, while Corrin constantly positioned herself well and made some great forward advances.
The first chance of the game came from early Charnock pressure. Rosie cleared the ball well after Gracie, Lottie, Corrin, and Rose battled to win the ball back from a Rotherham throw. Lola's shot was then saved by the Rotherham keeper and a quick ball forward and Rotherham counter attack led to a goal against the run of play.
Unfazed, Charnock retaliated and Lola had another shot saved. Eva, with a last-gasp tackle prevented another Rotherham advance, and Rose had a run down the left wing and was pushed off the pitch. Some strong play from Lottie then matched Rotherham’s physicality, and the Charnock defence held firm under pressure, with more strong defensive play from Eva, Grace, Lottie, and Rosie.
Nevaeh made a long clearance that found Lola speeding down the right, but there was no one on the end of her great cross. The game now was pretty much end-to-end - Nevaeh made another save and kicked long to Lola, who just couldn't break through Rotherham's thick defensive line. Two free kicks awarded to Rotherham added to the drama, but our girls stayed strong.
Just before half-time, Maisie and Amelia entered the game, immediately making an impact with clearances and skilful play. The half ended though with Rotherham leading 1-0.
Charnock again started the second half brightly, with Lola piling on the pressure with two early attacks, one leading to a saved shot. Maisie held firm in defence, and Evie made a crucial tackle to stop a promising Rotherham attack. Nevaeh's diving save in the mud kept the score at 1-0, but Rotherham then found the net twice more with two good shots.
Despite the game’s physicality, the girls remained vocal and determined. Eva was flattened off the ball, and Rose was thrown to the floor, but Lola responded brightly with a solo run and shot to make it 3-1. Rotherham scored again shortly after, but Charnock's heads didn't drop. Corrin's fine play on the wing led to Lola passing to Gracie for an attempt on goal. And Rose ran the length of the pitch and tried a shot
that, once again was saved by the Rotherham keeper.
The final score was 4-1 to Rotherham, but our girls have good reason to be proud today. They didn't shy away from Rotherham's physical play and showed great team spirit.
Manager James praised the girls after the match for their effort, and said he could see glimpses of their work in training paying off.
Girl of the Game was a close one today, with Rose taking the honour. And Nevaeh's strong performance earned her Effort of the Week, stepping up brilliantly for her teammates.
Well done to all the girls. Please come and support them in the home match against Rotherham next week and, of course and as always, UP THE CHARNOCK!!!
