North Gawber got off to a quick start, launching an early attack and testing the Charnock defence. A free kick on the left soon followed, and North Gawber’s number 15, Hope, struck an absolute rocket into the top corner - unstoppable and 1-0 to North Gawber.
Charnock responded well, applying pressure at the other end. Corrin’s well-delivered corner led to a goalmouth scramble, while Rose’s effort was well saved by the North Gawber keeper. Summer was called into action more than once, pulling off a series of superb stops to keep the scoreline in check. And Rosie, Eva, and Lottie put in some strong challenges to break up attacks, showing real grit in their defending.
Charnock pushed for an equaliser, and it looked like they might have had a penalty when Lola was pulled back while clean through on goal, but the referee waved play on. More chances came, with Corrin threading a perfect pass to Lola, who shot just wide. Then, in a moment of brilliance, Amelia won the ball, played it forward to Lola, and with skill and pace, she fired home an unstoppable shot - 1-1!
The momentum was with Charnock, but just before half-time, North Gawber launched another attack, only for Evie to read the danger brilliantly and send a long ball forward as the whistle blew.
The second half started with the same intensity. Lola was once again pulled back, but no foul was given. Grace was a constant presence in midfield, making strong runs to drive forward and showing composure on the ball. She linked up well with Lottie and played an excellent ball through to Lola, almost creating a second goal.
Maisie worked well with Eva to keep North Gawber at bay. Raegan battled hard in midfield, showing determination to win possession and launching a high ball into the danger area to keep the pressure on. Meanwhile, Gracie was lively, looking for space and linking up well with Rose and Corrin, moving the ball quickly just as practiced in training.
North Gawber turned up the pressure, forcing a string of corners. Despite Eva’s tireless defending, a well-taken North Gawber corner was met with a header that found the target 1-2.
Charnock didn’t let their heads drop, showing real resilience. Gracie played a great ball to Rose, who ran forward and sent a dangerous cross into the box, but there was no one there to finish. Summer pulled off a stunning point-blank save to keep Charnock in the fight. And right at the end, Rosie sent in another cross, but North Gawber managed to clear, as time ran out.
Despite the result, it was another strong performance full of determination and teamwork. Lottie picked up Girl of the Game, with Russ praising her performances all year. Effort of the Week went to Eva, who never stopped battling and worked tirelessly to keep North Gawber’s lively number 12 quiet.
Coach Russ summed it up perfectly: ‘The girls played well today; it was just the tiny details that made the difference. We just need to be a little bit braver.’
No game next week, then it’s the final match of the season away at Thorncliffe. Let’s finish strong! Up The Charnock!
