Charnock Girls U9 (5) v (4) Dearne & District U9 - Shield Cup Game
1-1 After Extra Time (5-4 After Penalties)
Charnock hosted Dearne & District today at Springs Academy.
Staight from Dearnes kick off, Charnock were straight on it with Maya winning the ball back and charging forward with Scarlett and Tilly. After some pinball wizardry in the box, Tilly reacted the fastest to poke the ball home inside the 1st minute, 1-0 Charnock!
The next 10 mins was mostly one way traffic with Charnock controlling the game. There was a few scares during this phase of the game but Elsie, Daisy and Alisha was a solid as any wall and equal to anything Dearne could throw at us. We made some changes with Ivy, Ava and Veronica coming on and getting up to speed quickly but by this point, the pitch had started to cut up and was starting to prove difficult to play the football we are used to playing, which allowed Dearne to start to get a foot hold in the game. There were a few late chances in the half for Dearne but Matilda in goal was awesome today and after a few condfident saves, we went into half time 1 nil to the good!
A little more tinkering with positions at the start of the 2nd half and Charnock started the same way as they did in the 1st but couldnt quite get the ball in the final third. Dearne then started to come back at Charnock and after a well worked move down their right side it was tapped in from the center of the box to make it 1-1.
A slight change in formation allowed us pick up the pace again with Maya, Ava, Alisha and Elsie bursting forward and trying to get her team mates on the ball. By this point in the game, Charnock and Dearne were trading blows and was end to end on a pitch that was more like quicksand than grass.
Into Extra time we went and again Charnock started brighter with Tilly and Ivy going close but for some great keeping and defending from Dearne to stop the attacks. Dearne then started to twist the screw and force Charnock back into their half and going close themselves on a few occasions. This was the theme throughout both periods of extra time but neirher could find a winner!
On to penatlies!
Charnock to go first with all the other girls stood on the halfway line linked arms and singing Sweet Caroline to get behind their team mates.
CHARNOCK GO MARCHING ONTO THE NEXT ROUND.
All in all, a very good classic cup game with two evenly matched sides going toe to toe on a boggy muddy pitch. Well done to everyone involved.
Well done Charnock.....great win!
