Charnock Girls U16s (2) v (2) Sheffield Wednesday FC U16 Girls

A lovely morning for a game of football, and playing our first league game of the season doesn't come much harder than Sheffield Wednesday FC. The girls have worked extremely hard over pre-season and friendly matches and we went into this game full of confidence.

The game started off a bit scrappy, nobody could get a foothold in the game with passes going astray. The game was very evenly matched, but with SWFC’s first attack they scored making it 0v1. But our girls heads never dropped and we started to create a few chances for ourselves. The first one came through Megan who broke down the middle of the SWFC defence, but just managed to shoot past the far post. Then the next chance came when a great shot from Freya O saw the goalkeeper off her line, but just went over the bar. We kept plugging away playing some lovely football and on several occasions SWFC’s Keeper came off the line to clear the danger.

SWFC were a big threat on throw-ins but we dealt with them very well and kept strong. Then again we got punished as a SWFC Striker nipped in between our defender and keeper to lob the ball home to make the score line 0 v 2. The game was getting quite physical and I was proud of the girls and how they stood strong. Very harsh on the girls to be losing by this scoreline and going in at H/T 0 v 2 down.

I couldn't criticise the girls at half time, just told them to keep believing in themselves and the next goal is important - if we get it then it's game-on again.  This proved to be - and we started off the second half firing from all cylinders taking the game to SWFC. We finally got the breakthrough with a fantastic footballing move starting from goalkeeper Ellie playing a short ball to Ellie H-S who took a couple of touches in her own box, played a lovely 30 yard ball, and Lilly S who did a lovely flick to send Lilly P on her way, she did fantastic to get round a defender plus the SWFC goalkeeper who came off her line, went round them both to slot the ball home making it 1 v 2.

You could see in the girls faces it gave them a big lift. It was Charnock doing most of the attacking play and then with a brilliant bit of magic from Freya O, who found space around 25 yards out and managed to hit a lovely strike straight over the SWFC goalkeeper, took one bounce then the ball hit the back of the net - it was a fantastic individual goal making it 2 v 2.

Another chance came with a lovely ball from Lilly S, found Lilly P one-on-one with the keeper but she made a great save. The first 20 minutes in the second half we were outstanding. Then SWFC started to come back into the game more, pegging us back and making us defend a lot more in the last 20 minutes, but the girls stayed strong and focused. SWFC came close with a long throw which bounced on to the crossbar but with great defending we managed to clear the danger. So the game ended up finishing 2 v 2.

This was a great advert for girls football - both teams went at this and I think it was a fair result.

Overall I’m really proud of the girls’ display this morning, they showed great character to come back from 2 nil down. Thought our goalie and back 3 were superb, staying strong with some outstanding defending from all. Our midfield were excellent on the ball. They also worked just as hard off the ball. And our strikers were always a threat, keeping SWFC defenders on their toes all morning. All 14 girls were brilliant today.

A special mention today to our 2 new girls Freya O and Ellie H-S, with outstanding performances on their Charnock debuts.

Thanks to Karen, Harry and David for running the tuck shop and those people helping out setting up the nets and respect barriers, it’s really appreciated.

So next week we are playing SWFC Away - looking forward to this one.

Thanks, Paul
