Charnock Purple U13 v Penistone Church U13
A dry start and fairly pleasant conditions, although soft grounds, the game commenced on time. An enthusiastic and very positive Charnock team, made a strong start and positioning was immaculate and everyone had their heads up.
Confidence is what we ask of the girls and this definitely shone through.
A fairly equal start to the game saw lovely passing and disciplined play and no panicking. Adequate pressure was applied by Asha, Poppy and Milly with repeat attacking play in the centre to stop Penistone's midfield. Both Penistone and Charnock struggled from lack of subs and Charnock took this advantage and played the best to date.
The girls were observant, anticipated well and played more experienced passes, worked the ball through the field and assisted each other. After 22 minutes of 0-0, we observed Asha make an excellent midfield pass through to Ruby in the right wing, who dribbled her way through 2 Penistone defenders and crossed to Poppy, who darted forward through the goal area, crossing in front of the goal chased by a defender, seeing a space, throwing the goalkeeper off and giving Charnock our first goal of pre-season and this season!!!!⭐⭐
We were ahead 1-0 and it felt great!
The girls were incredibly happy and strong play continued, but the girls had tried so hard, legs were tiring and Charnock left gaps and our reaction speed began to slow and Penistone scored a couple of goals taking the lead at Halftime.
The halftime talk was constructive, yet every player was in good spirits and we had every chance.
A steady start to the second half saw Penistone take more possession and we seemed to lose our way a little. Some good attempts to pressure and another few breaks appeared from great clearances from Diane and Leela. Leela grew so much in this game, it was noted throughout the second half, Leela drove the ball out of defence into mid and tackled, many Penistone players and dribbled, many balls deflecting many attacks by Penistone and she followed the pass and was relentless. Her confidence and speed had massively increased it was amazing to see! Ella, aka 'the mud monster', did a Stirling and heroic job, remaining in goal with a knee injury picked up from training. Ella made many excellent saves and was triumphant saving a penalty.
Every player did a great job and each week improve and this match marked the beginning of U13 Purples journey as a good team not to be underestimated. Every girl has applied themselves, giving it their very best to be a better player and team and the coaching team and Charnock are very proud of them. I'm sure every parent is enjoying watching their journey. Resilience, determination and belief is present every match and no more so than this match.
The goal Poppy scored meant so much to Poppy, the team and to Charnock and I've been told it was the loudest cheer of the day. And it marked the start of the next chapter: the next phase. We are very excited about this. And to add, 4 of our players were missing, so we can only grow stronger together.
Everyone deserved Player of the match, but 4 players grew in self confidence and ability.
Everyone had a good game and let's keep up the good work when we host next week's home game against Club Doncaster U13 Ladies.
Claire, Marc and Julie.
