Charnock Girls U13 Purple (0) v Steel City U13 Girls (8)
A steady start with some of the players taking new positions and a good, positive team talk. Monday's training paid off and there was a definite improvement in the girls keeping their positions, but Steel City were consistently marking the girls and a little faster so passing through was difficult.
I have to say, I was very pleased with the girl's resilience this week. With only 9 girls, it was the first time some of the girls had played a full match, but confidence is building and that was evident from the outset. Last week, an invisible bubble around the home team seemed to keep our girls away from challenging and pressuring, rendering us the inability to pick up the ball and take possession, this week was slightly different.
From the outset, the girls attitudes were different, more determined and scanning the field for opportunity. It was hard for them, without a break and the first half we conceded 6 goals, but with a reshuffle of players, this worked much better and only 2 goals went in and the girls’ confidence grew, battling for the ball while they still maintained fairly good positioning. A couple of the girls took the responsibility of sweeping to maintain a fairly healthy attack to try and get our first goal.
Ella - excellent in goal again, working tirelessly to retrieve every ball, alert and talking to your team.
Chloe - a good game in defence for you, saw you divert several balls through to mid and you were much more alert and quicker.
Asha - we tried you up in central midfield, which you made a good attempt at holding the line and pressuring the players. Moving you back to central defence, you seemed more comfortable and did some lovely clearance kicks.
Maddie - after asking to go in a central position, we tried you in central defence and you worked hard sweeping the central area, pressuring players and excellent communication.
Poppy - you worked incredibly hard to attack and tackle, but you had a tough job being up against some of Steel City's stronger players.
Diane - again 100% effort, coming to every match with a smile on your face and belief in yourself and you can see this on the pitch. Excellent marking players and driving the ball into midfield, pushing up and supporting players by working diagonally across and intercepting many balls.
Milly - a strong start from you pressuring the opposition, and urging your team forward. Your confidence has grown and you are starting to make bold challenges and taking chances. You made several runs across the pitch, assisting and watched your space.
Ruby - working hard as usual and today we saw you put that extra effort in and make high speed challenges, winning the ball to pass up.
Lizzie - you were one of the top players of the day, just missing out on Player of the Match, but extremely close. Excellent team work, holding your position and making several tackles against stronger players and winning several tackles. You're getting quicker to respond and offer amazing team support. You also communicated well to let me know where you felt there were weaknesses in the defence.
Overall, I was happy. After the first half, the girls decided they didn't want to make it easy for Steel City and more effort was put in.
Well done the Players of the Match Ella and Diane
Well done team!!!
Thank you to our parent helpers for running the tuck shop, sorting the hot water, spot the ball and Michael for setting up our goals every home friendly.
