Charnock Girls U14s (2) v Rotherham United Whitehill Girls U14s (4)
For the second Saturday on a trot at home, this time against Rotherham. It’s the first time we have played them this season and I know the girls were really looking forward to this one - our girls have friends in the team. Even though the results haven't been going our way I was really positive about this game.
Unfortunately, again we only had 11 girls, so it wasn't ideal but I knew the girls would give it their all and I wasn't disappointed. Going back to 3 5 2 formation. The first five minutes started off a bit scrappy with both teams trying to get hold of the ball, but didn't take us long before we started getting into the game and playing some really nice attacking football. Every time we went forward we looked a threat and Rotherham’s defence didn't look comfortable. We were creating some good chances - but not taking them. Rotherham also started to be a threat going forward but our defence stood firm. Finally our first goal came, going 1v0 up from our throw in, with a flick on, to find Molly, who did brilliant to hold the defender off, then sliding the ball past the Keeper. At this point we were playing some lovely football - great passing finding our players - it was lovely to watch. Then we had a great shout for a penalty but wasn't given and Rotherham got back in the game. A cross finding a Rotherham girl at the back post to put it in, making it 1v1. Then Rotherham made it 1v2 with their number 8 making a neat finish.
Going in at H/T losing was a bit disappointing, especially with our girls playing really good football that first half.
In the second half our girls gave it a good go. Again creating great chances, cutting through Rotherham’s defence, but just couldn't find the finish. There were a few occasions the ball was bouncing around Rotherham’s area, we just couldn't get that final touch. Then Rotherham made it 1v3 with a cross finding the top corner, but we kept going and our energy levels were fantastic, everybody was putting a shift in. Then a great ball from midfield, finding Megan who did brilliant, got brought down to win a penalty. Megan making no mistake 2v3. Our midfield supplied the Strikers with some great through balls, we just couldn't find the equaliser what we deserved. Rotherham was still giving it a good go but our defence looked solid. It was unfortunate that Rotherham got at 4th at the end, taking a deflection and finding their girl on our line to score.
Overall again, the girls were fantastic. We aren't getting the results we deserve but the pleasing thing for me is that we are competing in every game and going right to the end. We aren't far away from matching these teams on a regular basis.
Ellie - really good today couldn't do anything with Rotherham’s goals you're kicking was brilliant keep going.
Corah - your determination in the tackle is brilliant and when you've got the captain's arm band on you lead by example.
Harley - you were outstanding today, great positional sense, strong in the tackle, you are just getting better and better.
Evie - wearing The Captain's armband today and you lead by example. You are so consistent with your performances it's a privilege to watch you.
Leah - you are making that left wing back position look easy at times. Always putting a shift in and your strength now in the tackle is fantastic.
Lilly - my right wing back today you had a fantastic game, working hard for the team and specially second half getting forward putting lovely crosses in.
Sophie - you were tremendous in that midfield today winning your individual battles. You have settled into this team brilliantly, it's a privilege to watch you.
Hollie - another strong performance from you, box to box midfielder. Loving your skills in the second half, going past their players with ease.
Eva - for me your best performance in a Charnock shirt. Showing great strength in your kicking today to find the Strikers working really hard, well done.
Megan - brilliant performance today, never giving Rotherham’s defence a rest. Your power strengths and goals this season is great, keep going.
Molly - very strong performance from you with a great goal - nice to see you back playing up front again. Keep going, more goals will come for you.
All 11 of you we're brilliant today, it's hard to pick Player of the Match out, but Evie I think you deserve a special mention. Apart from your quality defending, your composure on the ball, you never seem to panic and are playing some quality balls out from defence.
Big thanks today for Christie and your mum Teresa for doing the tuck shop. Also Chris, Paul, Michael and Neil for putting the nets and respect barrier up.
